Mentoring –All the advice you need


Once upon a time, a few years ago, I was in a prison, much the same as you are now.  That prison was my own home.  I was trapped by pain and light sensitivity, and as a result, I couldn’t see the way out. I had become worn out and resigned to the life I’d been dealt. And as a very helpful migraine specialist once said to me, “At least I didn’t have Multiple Sclerosis.” – Needless to say, I never saw that one again.

Over time, my life and my circle of friends shrank, and with it, so did my self-esteem, my zest for life, and my attention span. It got so bad in the end; I couldn’t even do the one thing I loved, which was to read.

I had to deal with that disappointed look in my husband’s eyes, when he came home from a hard day’s work, to find me ill a-gain. I struggled to keep house and be there for my family, but I felt like I failed miserably.

This lead to me becoming introverted and withdrawn, eventually leading to depression. To make matters worse, once I was put on prophylactic drugs and told to keep eating so my sugar levels didn’t dip, I began to pile on the weight too. Oh joy!

 I had been reduced to feeling like a sorry couch potato.

  • Unhealthy
  • Overweight
  • Unlovable

In fact I’d turned into a semi-recluse.

What lifestyle choices can YOU make that make the difference?

First of all, the prophylactic medication did help me, and I in no way indorse turning your back on conventional treatment. It just won’t cure you, and you are then left with dealing with the effects of the drugs, which is very often muzzy headedness and lethargy. Not very good components to a healthy happy fulfilled life.

The secret is simple: It is having a foot in both camps – suppressing the worst of your pain with your traditional meds, and learning techniques to improve you life quality holistically.

For me, it has been a long road of trial, error, and elimination. I kept diary logs for around three years – much the same as I have produced for you to use. After seeing several Neurologists, one prescribed me slow release propranolol (beta blocker) and Amitriptyline (anti-depressant), which I could increase over a period of time until it suppressed and lessened my attacks. That was when I started to see how everything was a fine tipping balance. Too much, and I became a zombie, too little and the migraines got worse.

You can learn to listen to your body!

No one knows your own body like you do.

I had always been convinced that my hormones were a major contributor to my migraines, but by then, it was very hard to convince my GP as I’d seen so many specialists. So in a last ditch attempt, I paid privately to see an endocrinologist. It was pure luck that this one also specialized in diabetes and put me on a low sugar, low carb diet, that put me on the right track.

That was when things really started to change.

  • I had my medication levels at just right
  • I kept diaries to reveal patterns
  • And now I had a diet that changed how efficiently my body burned fat, and stopped sugar level yo-yoing and mood swings.

My brain seemed to come alive and I started to develop my concentration. It wasn’t long before I could read a book. Then several books, until I had read hundreds. And I had ideas, loads of them – Plots for stories, ideas for paintings. I just couldn’t stop.

I planned and began writing again.

What’s your dream?

Of course, there were times when a migraine would come, but they weren’t as ferocious or as frequent as they used to be. Very often I could sleep them off if I lay down for a couple of hours. I found I could actually work.

Are you wired to be miserable?

I read book after book on self-improvement and motivation – with particular interest in changing the way the depressed brain worked. A person can actually change the way they are wired with reinforcing and repeating positive thoughts. In other words, you can change from being a naturally down migraineur, into a person who manages their disease, and utilizes their enormous idea capacity, to reach their creative potential.

Being a migraineur is not your fault. It is not something you do or eat; it is a genetic disease from which there is no cure.

 So whatever book claims to offer you that, I’m afraid at the moment, at this point in time, it is not the case. The best we can hope for is management.

With all that in mind, all is not lost. I am living proof that it is possible to be a chronic migraineur and still have a fulfilling life.

I’m not just here to give you pain remedies – although I will pass on any knowledge that I can, but I feel it is my job to help you to unlock the creative person you are deep down.
